Q&A: Silver Peak CEO Warns of Packet Loss During Data Replication

Silver Peak Systems CEO Rick Tinsley said that more and more organizations are taking advantage of the cheap, abundant bandwidth of Multiprotocol Layer Switching (MPLS) and Internet-based wide-area networks (WANs). However, they aren't paying enough attention to the issue of IP packet loss, which is common to newer types of WANs. Tinsley said that MPLS is gaining popularity over the older and more expensive system of using private telco lines for multisite backup and data replication. He also said that distance replication is replacing the practice of shipping tapes for remote data protection. But when he sat down with SearchStorage.com to discuss the market for WAN acceleration, Tinsley warned about packet loss and security issues that go with the new methods of WAN connectivity.

Here is another great end user story, which appears in searchstorage.com.  In this interview,Yellowbook discusses why they moved away from Juniper to deploy Silver Peak for their WAN optimization needs.  Their biggest issue was accelerating EMC's SRDF application between data centers, which Silver Peak handled better than the rest.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a great customer reference is worth a million.  Here is a great interview between Silver Peak's customer, North Vancouver School District, and Kent Green of Network World.  I especially like the part where they talk about how Silver Peak outperfomed Blue Coat, Cisco, and Riverbed on key real-time applications, like video.

Here is a great article by Jim Metzler and Steve Taylor in Network World where they compare different ways of doing WAN deduplication.  As Silver Peak takes an "instruction based" approach to dedupe, we are understandably biased towards that method.  But, these guys do a good job highlighting the differences between the two, so it is worth a read.

Did you know the average enterprise has over 80 applications?  Because each behaves differently across the WAN it can be quite challenging to deploy a WAN optimization solution for all your application performance needs. Here is a breakdown of the most commonly seen traffic types, and some hints as to how to optimize them across your WAN...

Learn why the latest version of AutoCAD has challenges across the WAN, and see why this underscores an important point - that not all dedupe solutions are created equal.  What other apps are affected by the way dedupe is performed?
