File copy utilities, like FTP and Xcopy, are used to batch copy or transfer files between multiple locations, often as part of regular backup or disaster recovery programs.
Since XCopy operates on top of the Microsoft CIFS protocol, XCopy suffers from the same limitations as other CIFS applications.
FTP, on the other hand, does not rely on a chatty protocol, like CIFS. However, because it operates over TCP, it is still limited by the bandwidth and latency constraints of many enterprise WANs.
Fortunately, Silver Peak is able to overcome the limitations present in most file copy utilities through protocol acceleration, compression, and advanced data reduction.
Silver Peak Advantages
Silver Peak appliances accelerate file copy applications by reducing the size of data being transferred using payload and header compression. In addition, Silver Peak’s Network Memory detects when duplicate data is being transferred and delivers this data locally, increasing WAN utilization while reducing file transfer times.

The graph above demonstrates the performance improvement when copying an uncompressed VMware image from server to client and back. Note that once Network Memory detects a pattern in one direction, it is delivered locally when sent in the other direction.
Unlike caches, Silver Peak’s Network Memory performs sophisticated data reduction that is independent of transport methods and applications. Regardless of how content is transferred, the bytes themselves remain the same, enabling Silver Peak to provide significant benefits across different file copy utilities.
