All Silver Peak appliances are equipped with Network Memory™ technology for WAN deduplication. Network Memory is used to inspect all inbound and outbound WAN traffic in real-time, storing a single local instance of data on each appliance.
Prior to sending information across the WAN, Silver Peak appliances compare real-time traffic streams to patterns stored using Network Memory. If a match exists, a short reference pointer is sent to the remote Silver Peak appliance, instructing it to deliver the traffic pattern from its local instance. Repetitive data is never sent across the WAN, saving bandwidth and enabling LAN-like application performance.

If content is modified, the Silver Peak appliance will detect the change at the byte level and update the network’s “memory”. Only the modifications are sent across the WAN, improving scalability and application response time. (For more information on how to achieve true byte level accuracy, download this tech note)
Modifications are combined with original content by NX Series appliances at the destination location.
Unique Advantages of Network Memory
- Order of Magnitude Performance Improvements – By delivering repetitive information locally, Network Memory provides significant improvement in application performance. In some instances, 200x improvements can be experienced, enabling centralized applications to be delivered with LAN-like performance. In addition, Network Memory dramatically reduces the amount of data traversing the WAN, ensuring maximum bandwidth efficiency.
- Application transparency - Network Memory operates with complete application transparency. It delivers data with 100% coherence and does not alter application semantics. All authentication, file and record locking functions are handled by the native application servers, enabling seamless deployment and operations.
Performance improvements are provided across all enterprise applications, including bulk TCP, bulk UDP, real-time, interactive, and transactional.
- Enterprise Scalability - Silver Peak’s Network Memory technology is designed to scale to hundreds of megabits per second (Mbps) of WAN bandwidth. Because it operates at the network layer, there are no TCP flow limits in NX Series appliances.
Network Memory also provides exceptional effective storage scalability. A single instance of information is stored at each location (including the head-end), enabling Network Memory to track several week’s worth of information.
- Network-Wide Visibility - Each Silver Peak appliance is constantly exchanging information about what’s contained in its local Network Memory with its peers, creating a network-wide picture of what information is stored where. Data references are not limited to a particular WAN link – a local instance can be updated from any source. This becomes especially powerful in WANs that are configured as a mesh network, where branch offices communicate directly.
- Seamless Integration and Operations - There is no need to reconfigure clients, servers, applications or networking infrastructure to realize the benefits of Network Memory. Furthermore, the Silver Peak solution operates in a completely complementary fashion to application front end equipment.
