MILES & STOCKBRIDGE EXPUNGES POOR WAN PERFORMANCE WITH SILVER PEAK’S SCALABLE WAN ACCELERATION

NX Appliances Facilitate Backup of Remote Data, Enable Secure Document Sharing across WAN

Santa Clara, Calif., June 5 , 2007 Silver Peak Systems , a leading provider of scalable Wide Area Network (WAN) acceleration solutions, today announced that Miles & Stockbridge P.C., a leading law firm in the mid-Atlantic region, has deployed Silver Peak’s NX appliances to improve real-time replication and backup across their WAN and ensure secure document sharing between their distributed offices and third party facilities. Silver Peak seamlessly integrated into Miles & Stockbridge’s complex network environment, providing immediate performance improvements that address the company’s stringent security and scalability requirements.

“The sheer volume of data going across our WAN made it pretty painful to support a variety of applications during peak hours,” said Ken Adams, CIO of Miles & Stockbridge P.C. “It was taking 10 hours per office to perform remote backups, which was seriously jeopardizing our firm’s business continuity plans. At the same time, we found it difficult to deliver email, accounting, and CRM services to distributed employees from centrally managed servers in Baltimore.”

Miles & Stockbridge uses a fully meshed MPLS network to connect over 200 attorneys located throughout the mid Atlantic region. This includes seven offices spread throughout Maryland and Northern Virginia, as well as a remote LexisNexis facility in Ohio that is used for NetDocuments document hosting. Each office has 2-3 separate connections to different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure maximum network availability for these services. All offices are backed up daily using EMC’s Avamar software, and data replication is handled between the firm’s main data centers using Isilon’s SyncIQ Replication Software

The Discovery Phase
After an exhaustive evaluation of WAN acceleration solutions, Miles & Stockbridge chose Silver Peak’s NX appliances to solve their WAN performance challenges. Several features stood out on the Silver Peak solution making it a perfect fit for the law firm’s environment. These include:

  • Best performance: Silver Peak delivers the best performance on the full spectrum of traffic going across the law firm’s WAN, including VoIP, video and real-time traffic. Silver Peak’s Network Memory was the only WAN optimization solution capable of performing data reduction on the firm’s Isilon replication traffic, which is extremely time sensitive, uses the UDP protocol for transport, and involves large volumes of sustained traffic.
  • Ease of configuration: Silver Peak made deployment easy in Miles & Stockbridge’s complex network, which consists of redundant ISP paths and advanced QoS policies. Silver Peak enabled the firm to honor existing DSCP tags, while establishing more advanced QoS policies based on specific application types. (See the accompanying release, “Silver Peak Brings Unprecedented Performance and Scalability to High Capacity WAN Links”.) In addition, Miles & Stockbridge can easily “swing” traffic between ISPs with the click of a mouse, ensuring maximum fault tolerance with minimal effort.
  • Highest Capacity: Silver Peak offers the most scalable WAN acceleration appliances on the market, with 3x the WAN throughout, local data store, and TCP flows as the next closest competitor.
“Silver Peak was actually recommended by another WAN acceleration vendor when they heard the size of the data being supported in our environment,” said Adams. “They recognized that they could not compete with Silver Peak at the high end of the spectrum.”
  • Security : Silver Peak offers the only WAN acceleration appliance with encrypted disks. This ensures that data stored on NX appliances remain 100% secure, which is particularly important when Silver Peak devices are deployed at LexisNexis and other facilities not owned by Miles & Stockbridge.

Miles & Stockbridge saw an average 10-20x improvement on key applications across their WAN, including data replication, backup, file transfers and email. This facilitated the firm’s move to a hosted application environment, while ensuring maximum data protection through secure disaster recovery procedures. With an expected 2 year return on their Silver Peak investment, Miles & Stockbridge is pleased with their motion to deploy WAN acceleration.
