Silver Peak Extends Virtual WAN Optimization to HP Networking Solutions

Silver Peak VXOA on HP Advanced Services zl Modules Simplifies and Reduces Costs When Optimizing Branch WAN Connections

SANTA CLARA, Oct. 18, 2011 — Silver Peak Systems, the leader in data center class wide area network (WAN) optimization, today extended its flexible options for deploying “WAN optimization anywhere” with the availability of Silver Peak VX virtual WAN optimization appliances on HP 5400zl and 8200zl switches.  Leveraging HP’s recently announced virtualization support for the 5400zl and 8200zl switches, Silver Peak integration allows enterprises to easily and cost-effectively deploy WAN optimization in branch offices to ensure fast access to centralized applications, optimized backup of remote data, and the highest quality voice and video services to distributed employees.

As more applications and storage become centralized, IT organizations must address the increased demands placed on WANs connecting branch offices to data centers or the cloud.  Shared networks, such as multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) and public cloud, provide cost advantages over dedicated networks but often have bandwidth limitations, high latency, and packet delivery issues that adversely affect application performance.  WAN optimization helps, but deploying a separate physical WAN optimization appliance can increase operational (power, cooling, management) costs.  Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) addresses these challenges with a hardware-independent approach that enables WAN optimization to be easily deployed on any platform with the same performance and scalability as dedicated physical appliances.

“With businesses becoming more distributed and data more consolidated, WAN optimization is becoming a universal requirement,” said Marc Trimuschat, vice president of business development and alliances for Silver Peak.  “Virtualization is a key enabler for a myriad of network functions, including WAN optimization, and we are excited to see HP embracing this same virtualization vision.  This is another great example of Silver Peak’s VXOA in action and reinforces our commitment to providing the most comprehensive and flexible options for deploying WAN optimization on any platform.”

The HP 5400zl and 8200zl switches form a modular platform with the purpose-built, programmable ProVision ASIC, which meets the needs of the most demanding networking features, such as quality of service (QoS) and security.  In addition, HP Advanced Services zl Modules deliver a complete solution in a box for enterprise, campus, and branch environments.  This enables network, business, or vertical applications to be implemented in the network infrastructure in a scalable and granular fashion. The platform includes 10/100, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.  The recently announced HP Advanced Services zl Module with VMware vSphere® 5 and HP Advanced Services zl Module with Citrix XenServer® platforms deliver 57 percent lower power consumption and 43 percent reduction in space versus competing products. 1

“Virtualization is a key enabler for fast service delivery, simplicity, and scalability across today’s enterprise network infrastructure,” said Bobby Kane, global alliance manager, Networking, HP.  “Silver Peak’s virtual WAN optimization solutions combined with HP virtualized services modules provide flexible deployment options while dramatically reducing operating costs for budget-constrained customers.”

Silver Peak’s VXOA powers the company’s entire portfolio of physical (NX) and virtual (VX and VRX) products.  With Silver Peak VXOA, customers can deploy high-capacity, data center class WAN optimization on a wide variety of industry standard hardware platforms and on any hypervisor, from router blades and storage arrays, to servers and switches like the HP 5400zl and 8200zl.   Silver Peak offers the industry’s widest range of physical and virtual appliances, ranging from megabits-per-second (Mbps) to multi-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) in WAN capacity, with hundreds-of-thousands of simultaneous sessions in a single appliance.
