Silver Peak Launches VRX-8: First Data Center Class Virtual Appliance for WAN Optimization

New 4.0 Release Extends Company’s Performance Leadership with 50% More WAN Deduplication; Adds Customizable Application Dashboards;  Includes Support for Microsoft Hyper-V Server

Santa Clara, Calif., November 15, 2010 Silver Peak Systems, the leader in data center class Wide Area Network (WAN) optimization , today announced the availability of version 4.0 software including the new Silver Peak VRX-8 virtual WAN optimization appliance. The Silver Peak VRX-8 delivers over twenty (20) times more throughput than any other WAN optimization virtual appliance on the market, making it the first true data center class virtual appliance for WAN optimization. When coupled with other features of Silver Peak’s latest software release, including new optimization features, customizable application dashboards, and support for Microsoft’s Hyper-V Server virtualization product, Silver Peak delivers a robust solution for embracing and enabling virtualization across the entire enterprise.

“Release 4.0 represents a significant achievement for the Silver Peak team and our customers,” said Rick Tinsley, ceo and president, Silver Peak. “First, we’ve extended our leadership position in performance and visibility. Second, our virtualized solutions for both the data center and branch offices provide enterprises more options for deploying high-performance wide area networks and leveraging cloud services.”

“New applications, new protocols, and new business requirements are rapidly reshaping the makeup of today’s WAN that is under increasing pressure to deliver higher performance,” said Joe Skorupa, Gartner Research Vice President, Data Center Transformation and Security.  “Data center initiatives like disaster recovery, data center consolidation, virtual desktops, and streaming media are driving demand for WAN optimization solutions that can support the wide range of emerging and evolving enterprise business requirements.”

 Highlights of the release include:

  • Industry’s First Data Center Class Virtual WAN Optimization Appliance
Silver Peak’s VRX-8 is the first and only virtual WAN optimization appliance designed for the rigors of data center deployment.  The Silver Peak VRX-8 delivers industry leading capacity (up to 1 Gbps of end-to-end throughput), and is specifically designed to meet the requirements of  today’s most demanding WAN  applications, including data center replication for business continuity and disaster recovery. The Silver Peak VRX-8 includes built-in support for all popular Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) replication applications.

The Silver Peak VRX-8  software uses the same advanced  real-time network optimization technology as the Silver Peak NX physical appliances and the Silver Peak VX virtual appliances to address common WAN challenges. Silver Peak’s scalable solutions provide Network Acceleration to overcome WAN latency, Network Integrity to correct packet delivery issues and intelligently allocate WAN resources, and Network Memory™ to maximize WAN bandwidth utilization.

The Silver Peak VRX-8 runs as a Virtual Machine (VM) on VMware ESX (version 4.0 or later) hypervisors.

  • Enhanced Network Memory™ Deduplication Performance
Release 4.0 of Silver Peak’s embedded software increases Silver Peak’s unique Network Memory deduplication capabilities by up to 50%.  With newly patented technology, Network Memory enables enterprises to send significantly more data over existing WANs by eliminating the transfer of repetitive bytes of information.  This lowers bandwidth costs and increases the performance of key initiatives, such as file transfers, data backup/recovery, and video streaming.

“Silver Peak was instrumental to the success of our international data center build-out,” said Mahmoud Harb, Site Operations Manager at Careerbuilder.  “With Network Memory’s deduplication capabilities, we avoided a major WAN upgrade that saved our company hundreds of thousands of dollars in the first few months alone.”

  • Increased visibility through new customizable management dashboards
Silver Peak has also introduced new customizable dashboards for its Global Management System (GMS), which enable enterprises to easily monitor replication performance across the WAN, isolate network issues from storage issues, and accurately ensure compliance with Recovery Point and Time Objectives (RPO/RTO).

As the WAN optimization vendor of choice for leading data center infrastructure companies, Silver Peak has created dashboards for the leading data center applications, including 3Par replication, Dell (EqualLogic), EMC (SRDF/A, RecoverPoint, and Celerra Replicator), Hitachi Data Systems (Hitachi Universal Replicator and Hitachi NAS Replication), and NetApp (SnapMirror).  Dashboards for other applications, including products from all Silver Peak partners, can be created using Silver Peak’s customizable interface.

“We rely on a converged network infrastructure to support a wide range of enterprise applications, from EMC SRDF/A  replication to voice, print, file, email and web applications around the globe,” said Brian Crandall, Global Systems Architect at Nuskin, a $1B+ company operating in over 50 markets worldwide. “Silver Peak gives us superior optimization tools for ensuring that all this traffic coexists smoothly and their tight integration with tier one vendors such as EMC is true added value.”

  • Support for Microsoft Hyper-V Branch Office Virtualization
The Silver Peak VX family of virtual WAN optimization solutions is specifically designed to provide customers with multiple branch offices the option of deploying software-only solutions. The VX-1000, VX-2000, VX-3000 and VX-5000 were announced earlier this year with support for VMware’s ESX hypervisors. The 4.0 release adds support for Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtualization application to the VX-1000 branch office virtual appliance providing up to 4Mbps and 8000 simultaneous sessions. Silver Peak will continue to add support for the most common branch office virtualization solutions, including future additional support for KVM and Citrix XenServer.

4.0 Summary: Embracing & Enabling Virtualization Across the Enterprise
Virtualization is revolutionizing IT. At the edge of the network, virtualization brings the promise of one industry standard platform supporting multiple applications. Silver Peak’s VX virtual appliances enable this trend with support for VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V, both of which are included with Silver Peak’s release 4.0 software.

At the core of the network, within the data center, virtualization is enabling the consolidation of applications that previously ran on proprietary hardware devices onto industry standard platforms. The new Silver Peak VRX-8 appliance meets the rugged demands for virtualization in today’s increasingly sophisticated networks.

Finally, virtualization is changing the architecture of the data center, creating new opportunities and enabling more options for application delivery and business continuity. More applications running on fewer devices and even fewer network links over longer distances demand higher levels of network capacity, reliability and scalability as well as application visibility for more intelligent network management. Silver Peak appliances combined with release 4.0 enhancements provide the highest performance in each of these categories.
