SMTC Keeps Global Data Flowing Fast with Silver Peak WAN Acceleration

Contract Manufacturer Accelerates Data Mobility by 20X between China, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Apr. 3, 2013 – Silver Peak Systems, the leader in accelerating data over distance, today announced that SMTC (Nasdaq: SMTX), a recognized global electronics manufacturing services provider, is using Silver Peak to improve the performance of remote data transfers by up to 20-times faster between six offices in mainland China, Hong Kong, Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. Silver Peak was selected over the competition based on performance superiority, ease-of-use and acceleration for specific applications.

SMTC has more than 2,000 employees who depend on a variety of centrally-hosted applications that include enterprise resource planning (ERP), Windows-based file transfers and remote desktop (RDP) connections. However, increasing data volumes and a congested multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) wide area network (WAN) was impeding the company’s long-distance operations. 20 megabyte (MB) files would take more than two hours to transfer, Web traffic was slow and desktop application connectivity frequently timed out due to delays experienced over the network.

Silver Peak solved SMTC’s challenges with its Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) software, which uses real-time acceleration techniques for moving data quickly across the WAN. Silver Peak VXOA software overcomes the adverse effects of latency, congestion, and limited network capacity—all of which were significantly impairing long-distance data transfers and application performance for SMTC.

“With Silver Peak, we’ve seen transfer ratios as dramatic as 20-to-one,” commented John Ouzounis, SMTC’s IT director. “Bandwidth issues meant some file transfers would take as long as 60 minutes to download. With Silver Peak, those same transfers are now down to just five minutes.”

SMTC also saw a huge improvement in stability. “Users sessions would time out and fail,” noted Stephen Dunscombe, SMTC’s network administrator. “That just doesn’t happen anymore.”

“The decision to go with Silver Peak was easy for a number of reasons,” added Ouzounis. “First, Silver Peak offered a free trial so I could determine actual performance and usage, which was extremely important. Second, it is affordable and provides more bang-for-the-buck than any other product on the market. Finally, Silver Peak is helping ‘future proof’ our business with scalability and performance headroom for addressing our data growth.”

“Cost and performance were definitely key considerations,” concluded Ted Davis of AMA, an authorized Silver Peak partner in Canada. “Competitive offerings can be 30 to 40% more expensive and not come close to the performance levels of Silver Peak’s software-based approach.”
