Synplicity Chooses Silver Peak to Synthesize LAN-like Performance across Global WAN

Company Improves the Efficiency of Offshore Collaboration by Overcoming WAN Latency, Loss and Bandwidth Limitations

Mountain View, CA, September 25, 2006 – Silver Peak ( www.silver-peak.com ), a leading provider of scalable Wide Area Network (WAN) acceleration solutions, today announced that Synplicity (Nasdaq: SYNP), a global supplier of software for the design and verification of semiconductors, has selected Silver Peak’s NX Series appliances to enable better collaboration between engineers in the United States, Europe, and India.  By dramatically reducing the time it takes for geographically dispersed engineers to share large design files, Silver Peak has helped Synplicity break down the time/space barriers that often hinder offshore collaboration.  With Silver Peak’s award winning WAN acceleration solution, Synplicity has improved employee productivity and increased the effectiveness and integrity of their design process, while saving hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in WAN bandwidth expenditures.

Synplicity is the world’s leading supplier of FPGA (field programmable gate arrays) synthesis solutions, with employees in more than 20 facilities worldwide.  To ensure that developers can easily share source code and design information across multiple geographic locations, the company relies on a variety of core business applications, including Network File System (NFS) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) for file services, Mirapoint Message Server for email, Intranet access via a corporate web portal, and remote desktop access to centralized UNIX hosts.  However, high latency and packet loss – up to 20% in some instances – made it difficult to deliver these applications between Synplicity’s corporate headquarters in California, a disaster recovery facility in Oregon, and other facilities throughout the United States, Europe, and India.  For example, the company was only receiving 10% throughput on their IP-VPN link to India, a connection that is critical to the company’s global design and verification processes.

The “Magic Box”
To address the company’s WAN performance issues, Synplicity thought about replacing their IP VPNs with dedicated private lines.  But, this could cost the company several thousand dollars in additional monthly IT expenditures per location.  In addition, moving to private links would not address the latency issues that are inherent to long, international connections.  This was particularly problematic to users of remote desktop software, which send screen updates and mouse movements over the WAN in an interactive fashion.

Instead, Synplicity’s IT department decided to trial Silver Peak’s NX appliances.  After installing the appliances in California, Oregon, Turkey, and India, Synplicity saw a 3-4x improvement in initial file transfers on links with exceptionally high loss.  On subsequent transfers, end users routinely saw 15-20x improvements across the WAN.  Additionally, screen transfers that used to take minutes were reduced to seconds, and there was an estimated 7x improvement in email performance and Intranet downloads as duplicate content (e.g. file attachments) was delivered locally from Silver Peak appliances instead of re-transmitted across the WAN.

“I knew things were getting much better when a few employees in India began referring to the Silver Peak appliance as the ‘magic box’,” said Lam Hoang, director of IT at Synplicity.  “At that point, I made the decision to try out the appliance on other problematic links in different parts of the world.”

By turning to Silver Peak, Synplicity discovered a cost effective solution for improving application performance across its global WAN.  From source code to software verification, Silver Peak has become an essential design tool as Synplicity engineers share business critical information across geographically distributed locations.
