Email attachments consume substantial bandwidth, making delivering email to remote offices too slow. The underlying architecture of Microsoft Exchange, which uses the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI), is particularly problematic due to the transfer of many small blocks of information every time a transaction occurs. Silver Peak appliances reduce WAN load and accelerate the performance of all email traffic (Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes/Domino, SMTP, etc), enabling centralization of servers for easier management and better scalability. We do this by:
- Eliminating transmission of repetitive information (including attachments), which can improve perceived response time by up to 50X
- Prioritizing real-time traffic using a robust set of QoS capabilities
- Using selective acknowledgments and other TCP acceleration techniques to reduce chatter
It has historically been difficult to deliver Microsoft® E-mail (Outlook and Exchange) over a WAN or dial-up connection. That is because e-mail transfers typically require a lot of bandwidth, which is often limited when communicating to remote or branch offices. In addition, the underlying architecture for communication with a Microsoft Exchange Server, called the Mobile-based Messaging API (MAPI), causes significant delay when communicating across a WAN.
IBM Lotus Notes® and Domino® are robust platforms for enterprise collaboration, including a wide variety of tools for messaging and directory services, discussion, calendaring, and document management services. While the IBM Lotus family was designed for deployment across distributed enterprises, there are inherent challenges associated with collaborating across a Wide Area Network, including poor application response time and excessive bandwidth usage. These are solved using Silver Peak’s data acceleration software.
