Collaborate More Effectively on Infrastructure and Construction Projects with Bentley and Silver Peak

Don’t let distance stand between your architects and engineers. Silver Peak accelerates the performance of engineering and construction software, such as Bentley MXRoad and Microstation, over distance by as much as 20X. Architects can collaborate on designs more effectively. Engineers can transfer models faster between locations. With Silver Peak, your architectural and engineering teams can collaborate as effectively between offices as they can within an office.

Bentley MXRoad and Microstation provide architects and engineers with powerful tools for collaborating on models and plans. While effective within an office, architecture and engineering software can become more sluggish and inconsistent across distance. Bentley MXRoad and Microstation files are typically very large, too large for many wide area networks (WANs).

Adding WAN bandwidth will not solve the problem when locations are far apart. The throughput of TCP decreases as delay increases regardless of the amount of bandwidth. Even when distance is nominal the routing practices of service providers and the peering arrangements, in the case of an Internet Service Provider (ISP),  significantly effect the delay of site-to-site connections.

Silver Peak compensates for network limitations, allowing Bentley to perform its best even to distant locations. Customer and internal testing show that Bentley files can open more than 90 percent faster and transfer as much as 20X more efficiently as a result of Silver Peak addressing  the following network challenges:

  • Bandwidth – Silver Peak byte-level deduplication removes redundant data from the WAN, shortening Bentley file transfers. Silver Peak deduplication works with any version of an enterprise application, even when application vendors change their protocols or file formats.
  • Latency – Silver Peak mitigates latency, enabling Bentley to operate more efficiently over distance. CIFS Acceleration includes CIFS read-ahead, CIFS write-behind, and CIFS metadata optimizations. TCP Acceleration includes windows scaling, selective acknowledgements, and HighSpeed TCP. Latency is also reduced through packet coalescing, which re-packages multiple smaller packets into a single larger one, and through Dynamic Path Control, which selects the fastest path to a remote location.
  • Congestion – Silver Peak makes Bentley performance more predictable across congested WANs. Lost packets are reconstituted in real-time at the far end of a WAN link, avoiding delays that come with multiple round-trip retransmissions; out-of-order packets are resequenced, avoiding retransmission and processing delays that occur when packets arrive out-of-order. Extensive traffic shaping and quality of service (QoS) technique ensure applications always receive the necessary bandwidth regardless of the traffic load.

Silver Peak protects Bentley data-in-flight between locations with an Accelerated IPSec virtual private network (VPN) and AES-256 encryption. Data-at-rest within the Silver Peak instance is also encrypted with AES. End-to-end encryption is provided by SSL/TLS.

  • Improve collaboration by allowing architects and engineers to share models faster.
  • Increase productivity by accelerating Bentley operations, saving organization hours each week.
  • Improve revision control and eliminate errors in the final design by accelerating access to centralized Bentley servers.
  • Lower bandwidth charges by eliminating redundant data from the WAN.

  • Whether designing a new building or creating a concept car, Computer Aided Design (CAD) / Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programs — such as AutoCad, Bentley ProjectWise, Civil3D, Revit, and Solidworks — are essential to the creative process. The productivity of engineering, architecture and design professionals often suffers, though, when loading drawings from remote servers or transferring CAD/CAM files between offices.
  • Architecture design firm dwp has adopted a WAN optimisation system from Silver Peak to accelerate file transfers and reduce infrastructure costs by 80 percent. The platform, Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA), is now able to speed up transfers of AutoCAD-based files from days to minutes. According to dwp, it now takes only a few minutes to transfer 1 GB of data across the distributed enterprise, which includes 12 locations across Asia Pacific and the Middle East. There was an urgent need for dwp to lower its operating expenditure (OPEX) costs, which soared dramatically due to an increase in bandwidth costs necessitated by poor network connectivity between its data centre located in Bangkok and the various branch offices. In addition, link costs and latency were the highest between Bahrain and Bangkok.

  • On the surface, different vendors’ Wide Area Network (WAN) deduplication solutions sound a lot alike. When one digs deeper, however, it becomes apparent that there are fundamental architectural differences that have a tangible impact on the performance of different applications across the WAN.
  • Data deduplication is one of the most significant technologies to impact the storage community in recent years. By identifying redundant data segments and storing only a single instance of information, this technology dramatically reduces storage space and allows more data to be protected over time.
  • Enterprises have long been battling the inherent performance limitations of Wide Area Networks (WANs) when delivering applications to remote offices. Caching emerged in the 1990’s as a potential way of addressing this problem, accelerating the performance of specific applications, such as web services, while reducing overall WAN traffic. While caching achieved reasonable success for a few short years, the market for these point products ultimately subsided as a result of several operational and functional limitations.
  • Enterprises rely on a variety of different technologies to build Wide Area Networks (WANs), such as Time Division Multiplexing, Frame Relay, and Virtual Private Networks. These technologies use well established, link-layer techniques to deliver error-free, well-formed Protocol Data Units (PDUs) to upper layers. However, different network-layer characteristics result in unique packet delivery behavior across these technologies.
